Modern Mum and Daughter

French and Saunders are my all-time favorite comedians. I love their sketches! This one is called "Modern mother and daughter". Eddy is the mum, Saffy is the daughter. It explores's issues of Eddy doing everything she can to look young and fashionable and Saffy being the dour voice of her mother's superego.

Eddy's self-image is based on 1960s counterculture and the world of fashion and celebrity. She is fixated on self-indulgence and her ideas of self-actualisation. Eddy subscribes to every trend that arises, including faux-Eastern new age spiritualism. She aspires to move in the highest circles of creativity, fashion, and celebrity. She considers herself a follower of the latest trends, but, having no real sense of style of her own, Eddy is actually a fashion victim, parading the latest fashion trends without understanding them or understanding what looks good on her. Saffy on the otherhand, is the voice of conscience in the household.

Unfortunately, I can only find the old version of this sketch online. I've posted it up for you to watch to gain an idea of the sketch. These are some memorable quotes taken from a revised version of this sketch prepared for their "Farewell Tour".

Saffy: "What do you look like?"
Eddy: "I look modern, you wouldn't understand".

Saffy:"I thought weight wasn't supposed to matter, it's personality that matters isn't it?"
Eddy: "Yeah, that personality matters doesn't it? That personality looks good in a swimsuit doesn't it."

Eddy: "You've seen the bastard recently?"
Saffy: "You mean dad?"
Eddy: "Oh daddy dad, its just a title to justify his puny existence"

Eddy: "Oh! Bugger bugger bollocks to all of you!"
Saffy: "Mum, can you please stop swearing? Its not clever, not funny and no one is the slightest bit impressed"

I hope you enjoy this sketch!
